Government Shutdown Impact & Community Response
Last Updated: November 14, 2025

The recent U.S. federal government shutdown, which began on October 1, 2025, has ended — but its effects are still being felt across our community. The disruption threatened critical food assistance programs (SNAP and WIC) that thousands of families depend on to make ends meet, and the aftermath continues to strain local resources.
SNAP recipients in Franklin County include:
• 83,000+ children
• 96,000+ adults, which includes 16,000+ seniors
Even with government operations restored, many families are still catching up from missed benefits and delayed support. Local food pantries and shelters are feeling the pressure — some partners have reported serving over 200 guests a day in recent weeks, with lines of cars wrapping around buildings.
Despite the partial restoration of SNAP benefits, many households still face uncertainty about food access following the shutdown. Our community’s continued response will be essential to ensure that no family goes hungry as we recover from the shutdown’s lasting impact.
